Warning Signs of Dementia

Are you worried about a loved person who’s slowly changing behavior or habits? What are the warning signs of dementia? In this video, you’ll learn which signs to look for.

Is Dementia Contagious?

Is dementia contagious? No, it doesn’t come from a virus. It doesn’t come from food poisoning. It’s scarring of the brain that progresses over time.

Is it Alzheimer’s or Dementia?

Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia, but not all people with dementia have Alzheimer’s. Having said that, Alzheimer’s is the most common kind of dementia. It is the deposition of protein that causes people to be less aware, less engaged, making their brain work less well.

Biggest Concerns of Dementia

There’s certainly a lot of confusion surrounding dementia. “Exactly what is it? How can I treat it? How can I prevent it?” Another common question is, “Are there any new cures for dementia?” Unfortunately, that last one is easy…the answer is “no.”

How Do I Get Help?

How do you get help when a loved one has been diagnosed with dementia? If you can, have your family step in and help; it shouldn’t be just that one person who takes care of mom or dad. You can also find home care agencies or caregivers, but this can require some searching.

What Kind of Doctor Should I Get?

A lot of people go to the family doctor, and you may be lucky. It may be someone who’s taken geriatric courses. But more often than not they will say, “Well, what do you expect? They’re old!”

PAM

“My mom was the matriarch of our family…then she started calling a lot, and not knowing that she had called…and she got agitated. And the first thing that was needed was some meds, because she was sundowning. And once you applied some of those medications, she became herself again…she became more gentle and more polished.”

I came home and sat on the couch next to my mom, and my dad was across from us. And mom looked at me, and then looked at my dad and said, “Is this our son?” That’s when I knew things were much worse than I had realized. Well, [dad] wanted everything done his way. And he really didn’t have a concept of what to do.”

LOUISE

“The biggest issue was that he has 20 tumors…so he was in a lot of pain…he said, ‘I’m in so much pain, I just want to die’ in Taiwanese. The sad part was they gave him a lot of [sedatives]. So he was always asleep. But when he’d wake up, he was in a lot of sharp pain and he would start howling like a wolf…and so we just gave [Doctor Liz] one hundred percent of our trust.”

At the time, she was…dealing with psychosis type situations…so we exercised every option that we had, but it basically got to a point where [she] got so bad that they wanted us to go to assisted living, and we didn’t want to do that. She was not getting any better. Aggression was getting worse…but now…we call you and we make that little adjustment, and she’s much better…game changer quality-of-life. She has a quality of life now.“

“Well, it does take a village and you know, what a gift you have given Richard, to allow him to stay [comfortable at] home — when it looked like he probably wasn’t going to be able to. I think…I couldn’t do this by myself, if I don’t have caregivers that are looking after him and, and sometimes I hear from other families, and this is where…the team that you work with is so important.
